Evelyn Salassa was born on Thursday, April 18, 1940 to Peter and Lucy Herchak in Detroit. The happy couple could not have been prouder. They watched her grow and she attended Guardian Angels and later graduating from Denby High School in 1958. After high school she graduated from the Providence School of Nursing in 1961. Shortly after nursing school, she met a young man named Robert at the Skiwi Ski Club. Bob was the social chairman who also performed standup and he won over Evelyn. The two dated, became engaged in 1963 and on September 12, 1964 they tied the knot at Guardian Angels Church. They spent their honeymoon in Niagara Falls. The settled into their first home on 30228 Blossom Lane in Warren. There they welcomed their four children but quickly ran out of room and moved to 5338 Capri Drive in Troy. While Bob worked at Chrysler, Evelyn worked in the emergency room of Detroit Receiving Hospital, later at an Optometrists Office and then as the Blood Pressure Control Nurse for all of Macomb County. Her voice could often be heard on the radio and when it was, her children would call in to the station to hear their own voices. Evelyn was full of ambition, when her and Bob went to sell their Troy home she became a real estate agent to ensure the sale went exactly as it should. She soon found herself back with her passion in nursing, becoming a Utilization Nurse for Blue Cross. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She had a big heart and when caring for the children and grandchildren, the nurse in her would come out and take over. Whenever anyone in the family had questions, she was their first call. Evelyn was WebMd before WebMd. She was also the family hub. Despite her children living across the country, she kept everyone updated on all activities and loved to brag about her children and grandchildren. She especially enjoyed all family gatherings as they were so important to her. Birthdays, Christmas, graduation parties and any family gatherings were Evelyn’s favorite as all the people most dear to her were together. When it became time to retire, Evelyn and Bob traveled the country in their motorhome. This was not only to see the sights, but also to find their permanent home. In 2000, they settled in Naples, Florida, which Evelyn referred to as “Paradise on Earth.” Despite living on Florida, every year she would reunite with her friends and classmates from nursing school. She would keep in touch with family and friends with Facebook and Words with Friends. She played Mahjong on Wednesdays and would take on all comers in a game of Scrabble. Evelyn Salassa passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2019 with her loving husband of 55 years, Robert “Bob” at her side. She is the loving mother of Robert “Bob”, Susan (Jeffrey) Matthews, Michelle (Cory) Anderson and Denise (Doug) Lau. Her pride and joy is her grandchildren, Rachel, Dana, Brett, Nicolas, Jeron, Julia, Gweneth, Gabriel and Emma. She is survived by her sister Dorothy (Tom) Grossman and brother in law Jim Salassa.
